Tjaart Esterhuyse
Tjaart Esterhuyse is an actuary with 25 years’ experience in insurance and reinsurance businesses. He has a deep knowledge of reinsurance, having spent 12 years as the managing director of RGA Reinsurance Company of South Africa, part of the Reinsurance Group of America, one of the largest life reinsurance companies globally. He was responsible for the full P&L of the South African business, and all related activities such as strategy setting, client engagement, overseeing the business development, pricing, claims and underwriting functions, as well as finance, valuation and operations.
During his time at RGA South Africa the business was ranked first on the NMG Business Capability Index as ranked by its clients for 11 years of the 12, after being ranked 5th in the year before he joined. RGA South Africa experienced a gross premium growth rate of close to 20% over the 12 years. Tjaart also headed up an EMEA RGAX innovation team where he drove insurance innovation through partnerships for RGA clients in the EMEA region. He also has significant Middle East experience through his directorship of the RGA Middle East business.
Tjaart served as the President of the Actuarial Society of South Africa from 2022 to 2023 after several years serving as Council Member for the Society. Prior work experience includes group business as head of the Group Business unit at Metropolitan South Africa and health care experience as health actuary at Metropolitan Health South Africa.
He also serves as a non-executive director on a few Boards of Directors.
