Whether collocated or operating remotely, teams are increasingly working across borders and are made up of a diverse set of people from different cultural backgrounds. There is now a lot of evidence for the increased creativity and gains in results from diverse teams. However, this can often come with an increase in process losses and issues with communication and cohesion.

For multicultural teams to work at their best together, it’s crucial to find ways to build trust and understanding. Each team is unique, and the culture of the team can be influenced by the balance of nationalities, the industry they work in, where they are located and the company culture.We can help with getting your team to work together by fostering greater understanding of each other and also by helping team leaders to define and experiment with the most effective leadership styles for their team and the task at hand.

We can offer Cultural Intelligence testing for all team members and cultural values mapping as a team to identify potential points of misunderstanding. We can help with developing deeper relationships and also help with coaching for the leader.

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the ability to function successfully in cross-cultural environments. There are four elements to CQ: Drive, Knowledge, Strategy and Behaviour. Not only do managers who operate internationally need to know something about the cultural norms, business practices and etiquette of the different countries in which they work, they also need the drive and motivation to interact with many different people, think about how to apply their knowledge and adapt their behaviour to be successful. This capability can be developed with practice. CQ assessments can provide a baseline for where someone is currently operating and help them to understand which of the four elements might be the most impactful to work on.

At Emica we can help build strategies to improve on all of these elements and also measure this at a later date to track progress. Self and multi-rater assessments are available.
