What are the benefits?

Some of the benefits of coaching can include:

  • increased self awareness and development of emotional intelligence.
  • greater clarity on goals and purpose
  • insight into unhelpful behaviors
  • feedback
  • greater appreciation of own strengths and abilities
  • problem solving
  • Increased confidence
  • Finding your identity as a leader

How does it work?

The relationship usually takes place over a series of around 6 – 12 individual sessions. These can last between 45 mins and two hours and can be taken either face to face or remotely by phone or internet.

The coach will usually introduce exercises or other tools like personality assessments, 360 feedback, and values and strengths audits to help the manager identify where to focus their efforts and what they can leverage to help them grow.

The topic and focus is determined by the manager themselves. Sometimes the line manager or sponsor within the company might have some suggestions for areas to work on, but ultimately this is the choice of the individual and the content of any session is confidential.

Each session is usually structured around a process which will cover goal setting, exploring current and future states, generating options, and creating plans of action to move forward.

Often the coach will suggest exercises to do in between sessions to continue the learning.

Coaching is an excellent way to supplement management training. It is a very personalised intervention that allows managers to focus on the things that will really make the most difference to them in their particular situation at the time.
